To receive the D Magazine's Best Financial Planners & Wealth Managers, one must be a Certified Financial Planner in good standing, a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA), currently planning within the D Magazine geographic readership boundaries, staff does not count self-nominations, duplicate ballots, nominees outside D Magazine's geographic boundaries, editors verify each planner's CFP and FPA status/membership, total assets of at least $100million, average assets under management of at least $1million, 95% client retention over last two years, no current disciplinary actions, firms must be in existence for at least five years of application deadline, advisors hold themselves out as fiduciaries for their clients and provide them with written disclosure, advertising dollars have zero impact on the creation of the list, and planners are featured in the publication each year whether they advertise or not.
